Varietal Notes

What is Typica Mejorado?

Typica Mejorado is a high-quality Arabica varietal grown primarily in Ecuador and parts of Colombia. It’s believed to be a selection of Typica crossed with Bourbon or Ethiopian landraces, developed and propagated by Nestlé and later popularized by Jardines del Eden and La Palma y El Tucán.

Known for its exceptional cup quality, Typica Mejorado often displays floral aromatics, vibrant acidity, and complex sweetness, with profiles resembling Gesha. While not officially classified, it has become a prized varietal among specialty producers for its delicate and expressive sensory attributes.

Producer Notes

Juan Peña is a pioneering coffee producer from Ecuador and the owner of Hacienda La Papaya in Saraguro, Loja. Originally a rose farmer, he shifted to coffee in 2010 and quickly gained international recognition for his scientific approach to cultivation and processing. Through precise agronomy, in-house nurseries, and innovative fermentation techniques, Juan produces exceptional microlots—especially of Typica Mejorado—known for their vibrant acidity, floral complexity, and sweetness. He also co-founded CafExporto to support traceable exports and collaborates with neighboring farmers to raise quality across the region. His work has made him one of the most respected figures in South American specialty coffee.
