Varietal Notes

What are SL28, SL34, Batian, and Ruiru 11?

SL28, SL34, Batian, and Ruiru 11 are some of the most important coffee varieties grown in Kenya. SL28 and SL34 are older varieties selected for cup quality and are especially known for bright acidity, juicy fruit, and complex sweetness. Batian and Ruiru 11 are newer Kenyan varieties developed for greater disease resistance and productivity while still aiming to maintain strong cup quality. Together, these varieties are a big part of what gives Kenyan coffees their signature vibrant acidity, berry-like fruit, and clean, structured flavor profiles.
